The UK’s Supreme Court has ruled that “man”, “woman” and “sex” in the Equality Act 2010 refer to sex, not self-ID or paperwork (gender-recognition certificates). This agreed with our legal interpretation. We have published new guidance and are in the process of updating our publications to reflect the judgment. We are also working to provide answers to the questions we're hearing from supporters and the media. We will publish these as soon as possible.

Rebecca Bull is a solicitor specialising in equal pay and workplace discrimination. She assisted the Fair Play for Women 2018 campaign to inform and motivate the public to submit responses to the consultation on gender self-identification. She has researched, written and presented on the law around sex and gender reassignment. She presented her paper Impact of Gender Recognition Reform on Sex Based Rights at the Scottish parliament in February 2020 and has published articles in the top-tier UK law journal Modern Law Review (co-authored with Alessandra Asteriti), Scottish Legal News and the lawyers’ collective Legal Feminist.
